The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Monthly sales still as stagnant as ever

The sales charts for June have come out, and only 2 titles have sold above 100,000 copies, while the rest is in a very dull situation. I think the most interesting example of a title that's fallen down would have to be the Flash, which has dropped to 68,000 copies sold. Clearly, no matter how it's been angled, people may realize it's no better than Spider-Man's One More Day, and DC hasn't done much to make Barry Allen's return something to look forward to, mainly because it's just more of Geoff Johns' weak self-referential nostalgia.

DC hasn't given a reason for Barry Allen to be alive in the current DCU. It looked like he was going to be the one to take down Darkseid in Final Crisis, but that didn't really work out. They set up the CSI angle, but it really doesn't seem to work so far. And, unlike Hal or Ollie, Barry was gone for almost a whole generation. A lot of the people who would be reading him either barely or don't recall him; Wally was their Flash.

They gave a reason. It was just a self-interested one. :)

i will NO longer purchase DC or Marvel comics EVER - my money will be spent on completing the collection i have, if something well written, uplifting or special comes along from independent publishers i will consider them. these manchild asshats and their liberal agenda has lost a 30 year customer forever

I doubt if I'll ever buy any new, mainline stuff again either. The whole comic industry culture is so hopelessly borked that I don't think it'll ever get back to the good ol' days. Not in my lifetime at least.

What's worse is it reflects the culture in general. There's crap going on that people would've laughed off 30 years ago. Hell, even 20. Can't even recognize the damn world anymore, comics included.

If I was a billionaire, I'd buy the rights to certain characters so they'd be protected from these numbskulls.
