The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Oh no: Obamacare to be told in comic format

The terrible politician who helped Obama craft his awful health care plan is going to tell all about it in a graphic novel (H/T: Hot Air Headlines):
The MIT economics whiz who crafted President Obama’s national health-care overhaul now plans to explain the complex and controversial plan to the masses — in one long comic book.

Jonathan Gruber, a nationally recognized health economist who devised the economic underpinnings of Obamacare (Gruber hates the term), said his three comic-loving kids encouraged him to use the hip format of the graphic novel — basically an expensive comic published in book form — to tell the story of the complicated plan to 300 million Americans.

Unlike most comic books, Gruber’s won’t have a superhero like Batman or Captain America or a villain like the Joker, he said.
But there is a villain writing this book, and it's Gruber himself. It's sad how the medium is being repeatedly exploited for stuff as bad as this, and even sadder that comics and graphic novels with conservative perspectives are marginalized. We could sure use a comic or graphic novel now to explain what's wrong with socialism and demagoguery, but sadly, the chances that they would ever be given a chance by the current industry is almost none.

To quote Allahpundit, "What could go wrong?"

In a similar vein, did you notice Rep. John Lewis is writing a comic?

He was, of course, most recently seen first trying to provoke a confrontation with Tea Party protesters then lying about racial epithets being hurled at him when that tactic failed.

I pointed out this fact in the CBR comments thread on the it. It was quickly deleted. Posted a shorter, more on-topic version again. Some guy posted a harassing reply using anti-gay slurs. He appears to have not been banned (contrary to CBR's policies), but all the posts (including mine) were stealth deleted again.

I've posted a third, much shorter version there again. We'll see if it lasts. And if I get a name to go with the stealth deleting mod.

Yep. After Andrew Breitbart offered 10,000 dollars for documented proof, and nothing happened. Mhmm.

I have been thinking about joining CBR, but if your comments were deleted while the leftist didn't get punished.... Yeah, that isn't good, at all.

Wait, why would he use anti-gay slurs, if you were commenting on a Congressman who claimed there were racial slurs? I'm confused....

There's a vulgar phrase lefties use toward Tea Partiers. You can fill in the blank.

Looks like my last post was first modified, then deleted, so it may have been two mods. One of the mods posted a huffy little message about keeping the thread on track.

I pointed out I'd been talking about the sketchy recent past of the author and that nothing more could be on topic. He agreed, but then said I had been inflammatory.

Funny how the facts inflame some people.

Anyway, I reposted the description of the whole incident again. :)

CBR hasn't changed much since I first started posting there 6 years ago. You can post any old insult, epithet, or whatever you want if you're a lefty without much happening to you. Post any uncomfortable facts, though, and you'll be hit by the mod squad for... I dunno, the thinkskinned-ness of leftists or something.

I had a similar experance there too
I said that the Tea Party was not responsible for what happened in Arizona nor was Sarah Palin and her what I consider gross opinions.
And that maybe we should consider cutting down the retoric in the US.
And got called a right winger.
then someone began talking about the middle east and I said well it's not like they are exactly innocent nor are they exactly guilty it's a greyish murcky mess.
    and got called racist
yet these were the same people talking about limiting the rights of free speech.
    I don't know I just don't post there anymore.

Oh, right, I forgot that lovely slur can be used in a homosexual way.

Duly noted, now you clarified about that happened on the boards. Oh, they'd have a field day with me, as I can rip apart Civil War so easily. Or, go back in time to rip on the Secret Empire and their "Nixon = evil" meme. Heh.

Cerrid, I'd keep posting, but it doesn't hurt to pick your battles, either.

Y'know, maybe we should run our messageboard, denouncing Leftism in comics. There is an appeal in making your own, as Avi Green has done with considerable success.

I thought about that, but honestly, I doubt anyone could do any better than the Dixonverse forum. Maybe better software, but that would be all.

  8. # Anonymous Killer Moth

Well, the more the merrier, right? Even if I were so inclined, it wouldn't for a while, anyway.

Although, I do look at the site, this past weekend. Nice stuff.

  9. # Anonymous degu is not a number

"to tell the story of the complicated plan to 300 million Americans."

That should be no more than 299,999,999. I hate it when people assume I'm gonna read their crummy book.

  10. # Anonymous Killer Moth

299,999,998. Like I'd read a modern comic book anymore, right? Heh.

  11. # Anonymous The Drizzt

    Read a modern comic? Maybe.

    Pay for it? Probably not.

    ;)

  12. # Anonymous Killer Moth

Oh, we have fun here, don't we? Heh.

I wouldn't mind paying for it, if it had things like quality and storytelling. Those silly things.

  13. # Anonymous degu will not be filed

Aw, heck, maybe I'm looking at this wrong. At least this guy's politicizing a comic character who's been political from the beginning. Better than having, oh, the X-Men lecture us on gay rights or Robocaptain crabbing about the Tea Party.
