The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

DC still not letting go of Liefeld, who'll get 3 more books to wreck

Unbelievable. Even after the disaster of the latest Hawk & Dove series, DC is intent on keeping Liefeld on and giving him at least 3 more books to draw, and even write:
Rob Liefeld will have more of a presence in DC's "The New 52" than ever, joining the creative team of three ongoing series in May.

Liefeld will be plotting both The Savage Hawkman and Grifter, as well as writing and illustrating Deathstroke, replacing previous series writer Kyle Higgins and artist Joe Bennett. How this affects the existing Hawkman writing team of Tony Daniel & James Bonny and Grifter writer Nathan Edmondson is currently unclear. Liefeld joins all three series as of their ninth issues. [...]

"Rob’s always been seen as edgy, both within the comic book industry and by his fans," DC executive editor Eddie Berganza said in the publisher's press release. "That’s a great vibe to bring to these particular books. We really want to push boundaries, and Rob’s the guy to do it.”
All Berganza is doing is insulting the audience's intellect while furthering the impression that the industry itself is willing to throw its reputation out the window over this one artist whose resume has for many years been pretty poor. And it only shows that contrary to what Berganza says, they don't have much faith in the titles they're giving him to draw and write. There's plenty of third-tier characters and other concepts they have with as much potential to yield a compelling story as the major heroes, but if artists and writers as awful as Liefeld are given them to work on, then they're only signaling they consider those particular series and characters expendable.
