Comics Buyer's Guide goes the way of Wizard

Krause Publications and F+W Media have announced they're shutting down Comics Buyer's Guide after nearly 42 years in publication. Oh well, no big loss. They may have once been a magazine to admire, but as the 90s came in, they became far less objective, ranking second to Wizard as an otherwise dishonest news source on comicdom. Now Wizard was a lot worse because they resorted to crudeness, insulting comments about women, and even helped fuel the speculator buying of the early 90s that caused the market to collapse. But CBG was still very fluff-coated to boot (they would be cheap and lenient on DC's mistreatment of Hal Jordan, sugarcoated in their focus on Johnny Storm, for example) and their inability to put pressing issues in serious focus is exactly why they were no more worthy a periodical than Wizard was. A magazine focused on pop culture that doesn't take an objective, convincing approach to its subject cannot be considered a true, dedicated representative of comics as a medium.

Remember when Wizard also did the Obama suck-up issue, too? Yeesh. I'm glad they're no longer a print publication. I won't miss CBG, either.. so much dishonest reporting there.

About me

  • I'm Avi Green
  • From Jerusalem, Israel
  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
