The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Mark Waid harrassed Antarctic Press not to release Jawbreakers comic

It appears Waid has capped his reputation with a sewage cover by doing exactly what he once claimed he was against, and got Antarctic Press not to publisher Richard C. Meyer's Jawbreakers comic. They announced:
After careful consideration, it is the decision of Antarctic Press to not release the comic series Jawbreakers.

Antarctic Press is a staunch believer in Creator’s Rights and giving creators a chance to showcase their creation and allowing that creation to be judged on its merits.

Many forces, many of them should be viewed with great trepidation about how our society acts, have led us to this decision. We do not take this decision lightly as we do believe that there should be separation between “ART” and the “ARTIST’ and that separation has been blurred in our decision.

We appreciate all our supporters and detractors in this process.

Thank you for taking the time to read our statement.

This statement will be removed in 7 days.
Needless to say, this is extremely offensive and does no favors for Waid's reputation, Antarctic's, or anybody else involved in this suppression. Not only that, some retailers even tried to stop it:
The retailers were exposed for attempting to maintain a group boycott against Jawbreakers, but whether or not they will renege on their efforts will be predicated by the availability of the comic when it launches for backers this August, and then across additional chains in September. [...]

What’s amazing is that there are actually retailers wanting to bar the sale of Jawbreakers from their store shelves. One would think that just about every retailer out there would be welcoming the possibility of driving up sales, but Social Justice Warriors have never been one to court logic.
Well as I once learned, even stores are capable of corrupt practices, so this may not be a surprise. This is precisely why I believe a shift to original graphic novel (OGN) formats would serve comics better today, and might even lead to better conduct at the stores themselves.

There may be a legal case to be made here about whether this scandal was lawful to begin with, and at this point, any projects Waid does in the forseeable future will have to be boycotted, though of course, he hasn't done anything worthwhile in over a decade, as he deteriorated into a looney bin. On which note, if the following screencap from Reddit says anything, he's already past the point of no return:
If this has any factual bearing, Marvel's EIC had the smarts to put Waid on lockdown, and will be even smarter to disassociate from him altogether after he perfomred what can easily rate as a PR disaster. If Waid's got any creator-owned projects coming up, those are decidedly the easiest to boycott, and his Captain America work was already offensive enough.

I think Waid's career is coming to a close, because no sane publisher at this point would be doing themselves a favor to hire him after all the completely avoidable embarrassments he's caused that are only burying the industry and its reputation.

Antarctic Press secures their reputation as a 3rd rate comic publisher. Well done.

I take back the above comment after listening to Diversity & Comics. It wasn't clear to me how much intimidation was brought to bear on Antarctic. Good luck to D&C in going independent and self publishing. With his number of subscribers I predict he'll make a mint.

Lots of controversy for a book that contain subpar quality in its content, everything's normal in the office then.
