The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

A Netflix cartoon based on Jurassic Park also features LGBT material

Breitbart reports another cartoon on Netflix, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, features a lesbian kiss between two teen cast members, even though it's aimed at 7 year olds:
A teen lesbian kiss scene in Netflix’s children’s show, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, has gone viral on social media amid mass cancellations of member subscriptions.

“This is from a children’s cartoon on Netflix called Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,”
an X user wrote in a Wednesday post, sharing an image of the gay kiss. “Since when has something like this been considered appropriate for children?!”

The still shot of the scene is from the ninth episode of the show’s fifth season.

In 2022, Hungary’s national media regulator launched an investigation into Netflix over Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, as the lesbian kiss scene is a possible violation of its 2021 law prohibiting LGBT-themed material targeted at children.

Hungary’s National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH) announced it was investigating the streaming giant over the series, with the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet noting the cartoon is marketed toward children as young as seven years old.
So here's another bad example being set by Netflix, wherein such a scene is injected into a children's cartoon instead of a teen/adult cartoon. Sometimes I wonder if the mindset that led to comics and animation being dismissed as just children's mediums for decades was what led to this. As of now, the unfortunate result is that children's cartoons have become exploited for propaganda, and the article seems to indicate the producer behind Paranormal Park might have something to do with Camp Cretaceous too. If so, it becomes an example of Universal studios not taking good care of the franchises launched through their company, to say nothing of a Steven Spielberg-directed movie later seeing its legacy tainted.

So what's the point of subscribing to Netflix? It certainly is time to cancel subscriptions to the channel, and save some money, along with the sanity of children.
