Nightcrawler and Mystique's background changed for woke's sake
The true nature of Mystique’s power was revealed in X-Men Blue: Origins #1. Written by Si Spurrier and illustrated by Wilton Santos, Oren Junior, and Marcus To, the story finds Nightcrawler aiding a traumatized Raven Darkholme. Lost in her memories, Raven frantically searches for a missing baby Nightcrawler presumes is his infant self. What really makes this insulting to the intellect is that this was obviously written to troll the fans, but maybe the worst part is that, if a few past history items I once read were correct, Chris Claremont wanted to do a story like this in the late 80s, and at the time, editorial had the smarts to object. Now, years later and long after Marvel went woke, they allow another writer to do it in a way that's bound to be intent on pandering to transsexual ideology.
The story that unfolds challenges everything Nightcrawler thought he knew about his birth and parentage. Beyond not truly being abandoned by Raven Darkholme as a baby, Nightcrawler learns that his father was not the immortal mutant called Azazel. Instead, Nightcrawler’s father was Mystique, who used her powers to replicate Azazel’s DNA while impregnating her wife, the mutant prophet Destiny. This also confirmed Destiny as Nightcrawler’s birth mother.
Beyond Mystique’s assertion that she has “lived for years as sapiens males,” her powers are also clarified by Doctor Nemesis. In a memo to the Quiet Council of Krakoa included in the comic, Doctor Nemesis discusses his analysis of Raven Darkholme’s genetics. His conclusion is that Mystique is far more powerful than she lets on.
Doctor Nemesis confirms that Mystique’s so-called “shape-shifting” is achieved through instantaneous genetic mapping and alteration. He notes that this requires a manipulation of information that no supercomputer he knows of can manage. In short, Mystique’s impersonations of other people are more than skin deep. She literally becomes other people on a genetic level.
Again, it's head-shaking how Marvel's still publishing long after their artistic quality collapsed, and now, they're serving as a drainpipe for leftist propaganda. And all the while embarrassing characters whom Claremont didn't create like Nightcrawler, since he was a creation of Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, both whom are long gone. One can only wonder if Claremont's okay with this, and whether he'd have the courage to admit it was a terrible mistake to have proposed his early template that was since exploited by far worse ideologues for their petty agendas built on gross shock tactics.
Update: Bounding Into Comics notes that back in the mid-90s, it was established that a character named Baron Christian Wagner was the father of Nightcrawler, and Mystique married the guy for his social influence. While the Azazel part was concocted by Chuck Austen, that awful animator who was one of the writers in the early 2000s, and one of the causes for Marvel's collapse.
