Former producer on X-Men 97 claims Disney/Marvel studios undermined Black writers
Beau DeMayo, former showrunner and creator of Marvel’s X-Men ’97, which airs on Disney’s streaming service, has claimed the studio undermined black people and their stories.Even this is so, it doesn't excuse what deMayo was previously accused of. And even if he's innocent, his acceptable of wokeness is galling, and doesn't make for serious entertainment. Let's also not forget what happened to Morph, and also to Rogue, when the new take on the 90s cartoon was launched, and if he's got no problem with race-swapping one of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's famous creations, that only compounds the perception he's that kind of woke leftist.
In a recent post on X, DeMayo responded to news that a Wonderman project will likely race-swap a historically white character.
“I really want this show to be good but this makes sense as [Marvel Studios] does not take black people or our stories seriously. How could they when you have top execs making race jokes about black writers in notes meeting or saying ‘well, you can pitch that b/c you’re black,'” he said.
It's awfully hypocritical of somebody to complain about racial bias at a company that's already very woke without admitting he contributed to the problem in his own way. The X-Men cartoon of the 90s would be better off without this ill-advised "sequel" to sully it.
