Company layoffs begin
In another sign of how comics too are being affected by the economic recession, Diamond has begun to let some staff go. Even DC, as one of Time Warner's properties, has been affected: they're laying off a few workers there, including, interestingly enough, Bob Schreck.
Even MAD magazine has been affected to the point that they're going quarterly. That's actually not too surprising to me, knowing that when MAD first began, they were usually published 6-8 times a year, and it was only in the past decade or so that they went full time monthly. But now, it looks like they're going back to a schedule even less than that, because of how their sales must've dropped over the years.

I'm not at all surprised by the Mad magazine news. The last ten or so years the comedy that Mad used to contain, became very mean spirited. Just imagine someone like Chris Rock digging on George Bush, turn up the anger & remove the comic bits and you have the Mad of the 90's to today. When I worked at the comic shop from 1991 till it closed in 2005 I saw Mad going from selling 20+ copies a month to just one special order. Even when we ordered one copy for the stands it would just sit there 3-4 months before we put it in the back issue box for 25 cents.
The news from Diamond ties in with the tightening up of the low selling books. as you posted before.

I'm not surprised about the news about Mad, either. I accidently gbot on the mag's site a little after Katrina and (I presume) the guy ruunning the mag was going on and on about what an idiot GWB was (which mnade me wonder if the guy running the mag finished high school, because I seriously doubt he had an MBA).
Too bad, too, about what happened to the quality of the mag. I stopped reading it a long time ago, but it was hilarious in its prime. I wonder how long it'll be until they toss it into the grave?

I think I started losing interest in MAD after they switched to color format. And yeah, the humor was slipping away, and the movie parodies became less appealing.
