The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

So Paul Levitz is returning to the Legion...

But it doesn't take much to guess that this won't find the kind of success it did back in the Bronze Age when he took up the writing. And in the following IGN Comics article, he's quoted saying:
"It's such fun to be back in the future, blowing up planets, undoing Legion marriages, revealing unrevealed factoids, and starting improbable new relationships. If there's a better job in comics than writing the Legion, with its vast cast and creative opportunities, I've never held it."
Spoken sensationalistically as though that were a great thing. I guess he's going to take the same approach used in comics set in contemporary times and foist it on those set in the future now too. But even if he doesn't, this is unlikely to gain the following the Legion of Super-Heroes once had 2 decades ago, and after Levitz gave Dan DiDio the keys to the kingdom almost a decade ago, that's one more reason why many may no longer care.

I loved P.L.'s original run on the LSH, but IMHO, DC has (to paraphrase Ralphie from "A Christmas Story') fudged up the series ever since the original crisis I can't imagine anything he could do that would make it worth reading again.

Yet Levitz's second run on the Legion, which many say was the highlight of their existence, feature within its first year:

Undoing Legion marriages: a kiss between Saturn Girl and Timber Wolf, the almost breakdown of Saturn Girls marriage and the actual breakdown of Timber Wolfs.

Improbable new relationships: such as that between Colossal Boy and Shrinking Violet?

Blowing up planets: while, admittedly, Levitz didn't actually blow up a planet in that first year, he did have three billion Daxamites taken over by Darkside and then proceeded to have them sculpt their planet in his image.

So, is it really a contemporary approach to comics being foisted on us?
