Mark Waid continues downhill in latest Irredeemable issue
Mark Waid has created a truly oppressive atmosphere in which all heroism has turned to something foul or sick, and every character’s motives only deepen the pit of madness and corruption. If all he can think of doing is presenting heroism in such a tasteless light, then he's not helping at all. He's only precipitating the demise of modern day comics.

Or at least superhero comics. There have been a push in other genres, at least in independent comic circles (the stuff Diamond doesn't cover but Indyplanet.com does), but the treatment of superheroes in comics outside of comedy like Love & Capes or Darkwing Duck (and a few webcomics) has been mostly disappointing.

+1 for the Darkwing Duck reference.
That said, if Waid doesn't like modern superheroes or good or evil, why doesn't he go into another genre? He's almost becoming another Ennis.

I dunno. He's also doing Incorruptible, which is showing the ascent from villain to hero. I'd be more concerned if he was, say, "reimaging" pre-existing heroes into villains (*cough*Speedy*cough*).
Wondered if you saw Rick Remender's note at CBR on the new Jack O'Lantern: "His calling card for his assassinations is cutting open a target's head, scooping out their brains and eyes, replacing them with a candle, and then putting the top of their head back on. When Jack O Lantern does a hit, you know it." Pretty sick stuff.

IndyPlanet has a ton of great comics, (declaration: they sell our stuff too) and the best of them (declaration: we would not be in that top list) are fantastic. If people don't buy them, they will disappear. So go and BUY them now!
