Here's a trailer for the new Man of Steel Superman movie that's to premiere next year. Hot Air's Allahpundit doesn't know if it'll live up to its potential, but does say something I can get behind, that it does look as though they're going to try and flesh out the characterization more, and:

That’s how a “reboot” should be done — not by remaking a blockbuster with better F/X but by doing something unconventional with the storyline and tone.

This in itself can serve as a perfect critique for what DC's done wrong with their comics too: they've put more emphasis on style over substance, like when they change costume designs and other dress fashions (and remember when Superman underwent that silly electrical redesign in 1997?), to which we could add the omission of the red trunks from the design, which doesn't equal in depth character drama at all. Trouble is, this same costume redesign has apparently been put into the new movie too, and after what the guy playing Clark Kent in his teens said was going to be the approach used in the screenplay, even that may not work out.

There's still time to see just what the outcome of the screenplay will be, but if it does end up portraying the Big Blue Boy Scout as constantly uncertain of how to handle specific situations, then even in terms of character drama, they'll still have blown it. Human relations and character focus are certainly something that can help bolster a story about superheroes, but unless they stick to an inspiring path along the way, it all ends up being for naught.
