The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

DC may have lost the rights to the Milestone cast

CBR wrote about the Las Vegas Comic Expo where Scott Lobdell was unfortunately moderating the DC panel. Nothing impressive, but there was one eye-opener regarding some of the properties they'd once bought the rights to:
When asked whether there was a chance of seeing Static Shock in "Teen Titans,” Lobdell replied, “Nothing would make me happier.” However, he said "legal issues" prevent the characters from joining the title.
Does this mean they no longer own the rights to the Milestone line originally formed by the late Dwayne McDuffie? Well, it's doubtlessly for the best, because attempts to integrate them into the DCU were disastrous from the beginning, and they clearly had no idea what to do with them, in sharp contrast to the Charlton characters they'd added in the mid-80s (Blue Beetle, the Question) whom they were much more successful with. They weren't very respectable of the Milestone heroes either, seeing how they ended up treating Static Shock in his last appearance to date. And they don't seem to know what to do with the Wildstorm cast they've shoehorned into the DCU proper either.

So if the rights to Milestone reverted back to McDuffie's heirs, I'd say that's a good thing, both for the characters and the heirs too. They could now take them to another publisher like IDW or Dark Horse and find writers who could manage the material much better than the editors dominating DC today ever could.

My only real exposure to the Milestone characters was via the Static Shock cartoon, which I enjoyed. But you're right in saying that DC severely mistreated the characters, particularly Static and ultimately made their merger with the DCU pointless by barely even featuring them at all.
