SDCC doesn't guarantee a movie's success with the masses

Big Hollywood wrote about how people tend to get too wrapped up in the hype the San Diego Comic-Con makes about movies, and that goes double for the ones based on comic books themselves. For example, the adaptations of Jonah Hex, Cowboys & Aliens, Green Lantern and the second film based on Judge Dredd, some of the biggest flops based on comic books in recent memory.

Well that's pretty easy to figure out. To my knowledge, only 150,000 people attend the SDCC every year, which is just a fraction of the whole population, so obviously, you can't expect what people might like at the SDCC to charm everyone else who isn't visiting the convention.

I think a reasonable argument can be made that a movie co-starring Superman and Batman sounds so fanboyish it might not impress everyone outside the comics audience, because alone, the story of a team-up - or fight between the twosome - doesn't guarantee it'll be a meaty tale. They'll have to do much better than just a superficial announcement if they want anybody to take a look.

About me

  • I'm Avi Green
  • From Jerusalem, Israel
  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
