The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Greg Rucka should think about his own writing flaws before what Portland's convention has

Greg Rucka went to Portland's Rose City Comicon, and told the Oregonian:
"This town is lousy with comics folks," says Rucka. "But this town has also been lousy about comic book shows." It made no sense, he says, for a city with the depth and breadth of comic creative talent and activity that Portland boasts to not have a home-grown, high-caliber, broad interest comic con.
I think he should bear in mind that he was lousy as a contributor to DC Comics. He was one of the architects behind Infinite Crisis, co-writing Countdown To and rubbed out Ted Kord with no objections whatsoever. He even wrote the storyline where Wonder Woman broke Max Lord's neck to stop him from mind-controlling Superman to go on a rampage, and for this, she gets blamed.

His statement could easily describe both his and DC's attitude towards the audience.
"If Portland can truly have a true comics show, that doesn't become a media show but retains its focus on comics, I think it's going to serve the city well. If this becomes a big show, it's going to bring in a lot of money for the city."
How come he never thought about that when he participated in DC's very own media show, all for the sake of publicity over worthless storytelling? One that didn't focus on good writing that would please a wide audience without turning overtly political? That's just why it didn't serve DC well, and still isn't.

Rucka's got some soul-searching to do, and he has to admit he participated in some wrongs, many stemming from Identity Crisis.

When Rucka said the city was "lousy with comics folks," did he mean "full of comics folks" or "bad for comics folks"? His next statement, that the place is "lousy for" comics conventions suggests the latter meaning. My impression is that he meant Portland has a lot of comics fans, but it doesn't have a good, periodic, major convention. His use of the same adjective with two different meanings in the same sentence is confusing. But maybe I'm just dense.

Thanks for the link, Carl. I'll try to write a topic about it soon.
