The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

"Fantastic Failure" is bad for comic fans, but so is Nu-Marvel's own mandates

Will you look at that: it turns out the remake of the previous 3 FF movies was not worth the celluloid it's filmed on at all. It's been almost universally panned by reviewers, grossed little more than $11.3 million on its opening weekend, and the Newark Star-Ledger says it's bad for fans. Yes, that could sum it up, but I'd also like to make a point that this makes it more like a followup to Marvel's awful writing and editorial mandates back in the pamphlet pages.

As bad as it looks for this movie, and as terribly as Marvel's modern writers have handled the comics, does that mean Marvel's staff should've declared a moratorium on all publication of new series and merchandize based on the comics, if not the movie, just to protest Fox's continued grip on the film rights? I'd say no. Though it'd be hard to encourage anybody to buy modern stories in pamphlets to get their minds off a bad movie when recent writers haven't done anything good for the FF on their part.

After this fantastic failure, it'll surely be a long time before another attempt is made to adapt the FF into a movie again. It could also prove that Blacks/Latinos/Asians aren't asking for Johnny Storm's racial background to be changed, as this sloppy propaganda article claimed. What matters is the screenplay's overall value, and judging from the opening grosses, it's clear many filmgoers have concluded what they think.

What a waste.

Very good post! And I agree with you 100%. This movie was a disaster waiting to happen. They made so many unnecessary changes, that they simply shouldn't have titled it Fantastic Four. Anyway, I also wrote about FF (the comic) in my blog (wich I encourage you to visit):

I hope you enjoy my review, and please feel free to leave me a comment over there or add yourself as a follower (or both), and I promise I'll reciprocate.

    Cheers,

    Arion.

    Live-action doesn't work, period.

The box office returns for other Marvel movies would disagree with you, Drag. It works just fine now. I'm glad there are finally quality Marvel and DC movies (the awful Fantastic Four and Green Lantern movies notwithstanding) out there.

Can I help it if it looks like something gets lost in the conversion from comic magazine to live-action (normally bright colors) to me?
