The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Bleeding Cool is accusing C.B Cebulski of "cultural appropriation"

Is there something about Marvel's new EIC we don't know? Because it sounds like SJWs have chosen to build up controversy where there shouldn't be any, and accuse Cebulski of cultural appropriation because he once wrote some comics in the mid-2000s under an Asian pseudonym:
Marvel Comics’ new editor in chief, C.B. Cebulski, is being accused of “cultural appropriation” after being exposed for having used an Asian pen name to write “Japanese-y” comics for Marvel early in his comic book career.

Cebulski, who is white, used the pseudonym “Akira Yoshida” in the early 2000s. Marvel “substantiated” the fake persona in written interviews to comics fan sites saying that Cebulski was a Japanese man who came to America to write comics with an Asian flair.

Comic book news writer Rich Johnston had suspicions years ago that this “Akira Yoshida” was a pseudonym. But, in 2006, Cebulski came forward to assure fans that Yoshida was a “real person.”

“It was at the beginning of 2006 that I first asked then-Marvel associate editor C.B. Cebulski if he wrote using the pseudonym Akira Yoshida,” Johnston wrote at the time. “He had heard the rumor and denied it, telling me that Akira Yoshida was an actual person and that his numerous office visits and convention appearances debunked it. He promised pictures, but none were forthcoming.”

But this week, Cebulski has admitted that he did, indeed, pretend to be an Asian man over a decade ago. In a statement to Bleeding Cool, the new Marvel boss said:

I stopped writing under the pseudonym Akira Yoshida after about a year. It wasn’t transparent, but it taught me a lot about writing, communication, and pressure. I was young and naïve and had a lot to learn back then. But this is all old news that has been dealt with, and now as Marvel’s new Editor-in-Chief, I’m turning a new page and am excited to start sharing all my Marvel experiences with up and coming talent around the globe.
Do they have a problem with that? It actually does figure they would; this was one of the news sources, after all, that was otherwise perfectly fine with everything Joe Quesada and Axel Alonso did as EICs. Little or no criticism of their storytelling in Avengers and Spider-Man, for example, total suckups to Brian Bendis and the crossovers as well, and look where it got Marvel - in a spot with poor sales that may be too late to save. And then they have the gall to imply that a white man's not allowed to use named more common in Asian society, as though the Ainu of Japan - who're more caucasian - couldn't possibly use them as well. Just goes to show what ignoramuses the SJW crowd siding with Quesada and Alonso really are.

For now, the jury is still out on whether Cebulski's a more respectable man than Quesada and Alonso, but it does seem like BC's trying to undermine him because his positions don't coincide enough with theirs.

As for the stories Cebulski wrote in the mid-2000s, on their own they may be okay, but as connections with the greater MCU, it wouldn't surprise me if they were failures, due to the bad influence Quesada caused. In any case, whether or not Cebulski can prove he has what it takes to make improvements for the MCU remains to be seen.

My favorite author used pseudonyms for her novels. Authors use them for different reasons and I don't think C.B used his pseudonym to appropriate Japanese culture. SJWs are just trying to find something to get him fired so another Axel Alonso can take his place. If this is all they found then C.B. has a clean record.
