The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

What a farce: GLAAD nominates cancelled books from Marvel for their awards

Comics which clearly did not find an audience, not even amongst LGBT advocates. Ian Miles Cheong has the story at the Daily Caller:
Comic book readers are apparently not fans of progressive politics—a fact no more evident in Marvel’s decision to cancel every single one of its comics that has been nominated by the LGBTQ advocacy group, GLAAD.

In December, the publisher announced its decision to cancel many of its comics, citing poor sales. LGBTQ, feminist, and social justice-themed comics involving stories that revolved around Black Lives Matter, illegal immigration, and LGBTQ issues were among those to end up on the chopping block. [...]

The lineup, which was announced yesterday, includes “America,” featuring a teenage Latina girl named America Chavez, whose stories revolve around her life as a queer immigrant in college. The comic’s author, Gabby Rivera, is an outspoken “Latinx” writer who goes on periodic rants about “sexism,” “antiblackness,” and President Trump on social media.
And Marvel does nothing to get them to stop, no matter how badly it hurts their PR. When they're as rabid as that, it's zero surprise it can damage sales very badly.

Even DC's SJW-pandering hasn't sold well, nor have the GLAAD nominated titles from smaller publishers, namely, a company Mark Waid originally co-founded:
Aside from DC’s “Batwoman,” which showed relatively poor sales throughout 2017, the rest of the comics that picked up nominations from GLAAD are largely published by BOOM! Studios, selling fewer than 3000 copies each month—a far cry from DC’s “Doomsday Clock,” which sold 158,000 copies in December.
And even Doomsday Clock's sales are pathetic, because they're far below the millions mark. Besides, if Doomsday Clock puts an emphasis on darkness, it's not something I believe DC should be touting as a perfect example of storytelling. Even if it's not political per se, that's still no excuse, and crossovers are no improvement. As for Boom Studios, if this is what they're all about now, no wonder they're not a company to admire.

These are just a few examples of the kind of politicized pandering both Marvel and DC alike have to start moving away from, even metaphorically, because not everyone's fooled by that approach either.

It's SOP for SJW organizations to have "Awards" which serve no purpose except getting news coverage for themselves and their agenda. So this shouldn't be a surprise. Check the Oscars sometime.
