One comics news site shuts down, another gets a bad EIC appointed
It wasn’t just Buzzfeed and Huffington Post that withered away this week, The Outhouse, the long running satirical comics news site, is ending its run in a week, as reported by Lord Simian, aka Robert Morris. It’s sad, but the site had lost its edge since its two leading lights – Christian Hoffer and Jude Terror – left. [...]Well the latter's proven to be rather dreadful now that he works for Bleeding Cool, so while it may be a shame the site he originally worked for is closing, they were still better off without him. As maybe Comicosity would be if it weren't for the man who's now been appointed their main editor:
But luckily Matt Santori is taking over the site, another strong voice out there who should continue the site’s record of hosting insightful writing about comics. [...]Seriously? A guy who approved of the social justice tactics Marvel was notorious for a few years ago, including the anti-sexuality steps? Sigh. I'm afraid that's just no improvement whatsoever. And on that note, I made a most eyebrow-raising discovery in the tweets written by Santori a few months ago relating to 2 of DC's most rock bottom event miniseries:
With HEROES IN CRISIS, I’m seeing a lot of comparisons to IDENTITY CRISIS.— Matt Santori 🏳️🌈 (@FotoCub) September 22, 2018
If you didn’t like Identity Crisis, you are definitely not going to like this book.
And if you did like Identity Crisis (as I did, despite its flaws), you still may not like this book. 😕
Which part is the yikes for? Because I accept that I get sideeye for liking Identity Crisis. It’s structurally very excellent, yet the misogyny is very problematic.— Matt Santori 🏳️🌈 (@FotoCub) September 22, 2018
He admits Identity Crisis had flaws (or does he?), yet he still liked it?!? Even after all the one-sided depictions of women in the story? Hmm, I'm not sure what he believes in, where he stands, or anything. If the misogyny does pose a problem, then the overall story should be offensive and not worth the paper it was printed on. I wouldn't call a story with such vile elments "structurally excellent". If he's going to overlook the seriousness of the issue with the women, he's not making a good point at all.
Yeah. The things most people love about Identity Crisis are completely missing. Like the emotion.— Matt Santori 🏳️🌈 (@FotoCub) September 22, 2018
Exactly the same. I reread Identity Crisis #1 and Ralph’s wail hit me deep in my gut. There’s nothing that feels emotional in this book. Hollow.— Matt Santori 🏳️🌈 (@FotoCub) September 26, 2018
Whatever "emotion" it had was contrived and stilted, but it's still nothing compared to the minimizing of serious issues like sexual assault, something that's eluded these charlatans entirely. And that only explains why Comicosity is such a waste of time, much like Comics Beat's been for quite a while now.
