Disney rehires vile director for GotG movies

Yikes, this is only more bad PR news for Disney/Marvel, as out of the blue, they rehired James Gunn to write and direct the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the repugnance of his past comments about sexual abuse notwithstanding:
After a series of meetings with Walt Disney Pictures honcho Alan Horn, fired director James Gunn will return to the Marvel fold.

Gunn has been re-hired to direct the third installment in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, the Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana series about misfits who protect outer-space, an individual familiar with the project told Variety.

Gunn was fired last July following the resurfacing of offensive tweets that made light of child sex abuse. The director apologized for the sentiments, which were bubbled up by conservative talking head Mike Cernovich, but was swiftly chopped by family-friendly Disney over the graphic and immature nature of his comments.

The studio had never replaced him with any other director on the project, another insider added. Leadership is said to be satisfied with his contrition. Gunn will also write the screenplay for the third installment, which is undated but slated for 2020. Aside from the notable reversal of a swift decision, Gunn’s rehire presents a conflict of superhero proportions — he’s currently in talks to write and direct a sequel of “Suicide Squad,” the DC Comics villain franchise.
I guess by sharp contrast, they won't be rehiring Roseanne Barr, even though she made far fewer offensive comments than Gunn ever did in a number of years? Then that only compounds the mendacity of their MO. This could easily build up to quite a PR crisis, because vermin like Gunn don't repent that easily, and there will be moviegoers (and comics fans) who're bound to stay away from the next entry because what he said in the past is not so easy to excuse or overlook.

And look how the trade journal predictably makes this look like a "conservative conspiracy" when they cite Cernovich. As if that makes Gunn's deviations automatically excusable.

And that's not the only embarrassment Disney's facing along with Marvel. Samuel Jackson, who's played Nick Fury in several Marvel movies to date, has taken things from bad to worse with his attacks on Donald Trump, even at the risk of alienating moviegoers who watched the Avengers:
Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t care if supporters of President Trump no longer see his movies.

During an interview with Esquire published this week, the veteran actor trashed the president, referring to him with some unflattering expletives.

“This motherf–ker is like ruining the planet and all kinds of other crazy s–t,” the 70-year-old actor said. “And the people think that’s OK. It’s not f–king OK. And if you’re not saying anything, then you’re complicit.”

When asked if he was worried about antagonizing Trump voters, the “Avengers” star dismissed concerns: “I know how many motherf–kers hate me. ‘I’m never going to see a Sam Jackson movie again.’ F–k I care? If you never went to another movie I did in my life, I’m not going to lose any money. I already cashed that check. F–k you. Burn up my videotapes. I don’t give a f–k.”
Sounds like he doesn't give a damn about the movies he starred in either, or he wouldn't be inviting anybody to destroy the videos. The Captain Marvel movie's already plummeted in box office receipts, even as it continues to maintain the 1st spot, and Jackson's current tirade won't bode well for video sales any more than tickets at the booth. Another sign that fortunes could be turning around in the future for the Marvel movieverse.

Dang, just when you think Bob Iger couldn't sink even lower, he allows Gunn to be rehired. Sometimes I wish Marty Wolf from Big Fat Liar was the one who ran Disney. I mean yeah, sure, he's a serial liar, and a thoroughly unpleasant person to be around, but at least he made sure those who were fired STAYED fired. I know if I were in Iger's position, I would have gone out of my way to ensure Gunn couldn't get ANY job afterward, even paint loser on his picture and fax it to every studio.

As far as Samuel Jackson, let's hope George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, Bob Iger, and Steven Spielberg, among others, are exceptionally forgiving of his effectively encouraging people to burn the DVDs and Videos of his past library, because while he himself may not care about the money loss as a result, those guys most certainly would care about losing their money (well, okay, George Lucas might not care based on his explicitly being a communist, and Bob Iger's recent antics indicates he seems to care more about being pure in his leftist politics than caring for a profit, but the others...).

If it is a good movie, I don't care whether the actors and director's statements are hewing to politically correct dogma or not.
