Alabama native's potentially politically motivated comic gets selected mighty quick for a film

The Birmingham News interviewed a lawyer whose first comic, published at Dark Horse, "Kill Whitey Donovan", looks like it's being adapted pretty quickly for movies:
Why did you choose to write about the Civil War?

Hattie and Anna’s story in “Kill Whitey Donovan” centers around their identity. The Civil War, above all, was a war for the identity of this nation. It was literally fought over the question of what kind of society we, as a country, would be – a people that tolerates the enslavement and deprivation of a minority, or a people that will not. I’m simply fascinated by the politics of that time. I think it’s relevant today as much as it has ever been. And so, Hattie and Anna’s conflict with these external expectations of who they’re supposed to be in the world and their internal struggle with who they feel they are verses how the world sees them, set against the backdrop of a war that was the manifestation of all of those themes seemed irresistible.
In what way is it relevant by modern standards? If the comic's meant as a metaphor for Trump, she's ignoring how black employment's at its highest levels in years under Trump, and she's even ignoring that Abraham Lincoln, who freed blacks from enslavement in his time, was a Republican president. Is this brought up in the comic, or, is the script written in a way claiming today's conservatives aren't and can't be as altruistic as those of Lincoln's time?

And it sure is strange how something so new is being adapted to film so quickly. If it were written by a Republican supporter, something tells me it wouldn't be noticed so fast, let alone considered for adaptation. And all this time, modern slavemongering in Islamic countries is off the table as a subject for many filmmakers and comics writers alike. If an issue can't be addressed from a modern perspective, it does little good to focus on it in a past tense.

Lincoln was a Republican, but the Republican Party of his time was very different from ours. Southern white conservatives switched their allegiance from the Democrats to the Republicans after LBJ's civil rights legislation and Nixon's reaching out to them, and both parties changed their character dramatically around that time. It is really anachronistic and meaningless to label Lincoln a conservative.

Nope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiprVX4os2Y

Prager University? You think that a youtube video from the fake non-academic without-a-campus Prager University is the last word on the subject?

The video does not actually contradict the prior post, it just talks around it.

Maybe now we should go on to more important questions. Was Confucius a Democrat or a Republican? That makes as much sense as asking whether Lincoln was conservative or liberal.

Did you even watch the video? I don't think you did. I won't even debate you because you ignore everything that rebuts your insane worldview.

Also, why do you keep showing up here? If I ran this blog, you'd have been banned a long time ago because you don't add anything to any conversation. You're just a troll, as your sarcastic comment about Confucius proves.

Get a life, and go pollute the comments section of some liberal blog.

The liberal and conservative devotees of this blog have every much as right to post comments as the right-wing ones. Making the comments section boring for the sake of ideological conformity is a dead end for any blog.

The Prager video points out that Southern democratic presidents like Clinton and Carter have been able to get votes in the South to suggest that somehow Southern whites did not care that the Democratic Party was the party of desegregation and civil rights. It does not try to deny that Nixon had a southern strategy, only to suggest that his strategy was irrelevant to winning the South. It recognizes a shift to the Republican Party but says that this was for entirely different reasons that have nothing to do with civil rights legislation and that the bad old days are dead. Not very convincing, mostly opinion rather than facts, and mostly beside the point.

All this comes from a company that, although devoted solely to making videos (and videos advancing one particular ideology at that!), uses the word University in its name to try to give itself credibility. It is like saying that Squirrel Girl is published by Disney University Press. How can you trust something that blatantly phony?
