The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

The double-standard on US cartoons with smutty content

Since we were on the subject of lewd manga previously, and how western sources were going out of their way to censor it, Newsbusters had a whole item 2 months ago about a would-be adult cartoon on Netflix called Hoops that's been sexualizing minors in its own way, yet for some reason seems to draw no local critical response. Some of the dialogue in the cartoon is very gross, and while I may be highlighting it here, I don't feel comfortable about it:
Netflix's Hoops, a raunchy cartoon released on August 21, is definitely for adults. Just as this series isn’t for kids, neither is its main character, Ben Hopkins (Jake Johnson, New Girl), who coaches the Lenwood High School basketball team.

Ben is an inappropriate and immature character, who often says “fuck.” He also has bizarre fascinations he makes known to all, such as with the film Little Man Tate, and a dream of getting his “multiple dicks sucked.” [...]

Beyond enticing minors with pornography, Ben tries to better his team by scouting 16-year-old Matty (A.D. Miles). Ben is so desperate to have an unenthusiastic Matty play that he makes him an offer. “Look, if you penetrate a woman before Saturday, will you play in the game?” Ben asks, taking Matty’s non answer as a yes.
I think the challenging question is whether gross garbage like this is given a pass in Australia and the European continent, in contrast to adult manga and anime, which apparently isn't? Well if it turns out that's the case, they really should be ashamed of themselves for taking anti-competitive measures against Japan's medium while filth like this in the west is given a free pass. Obviously, Japanese products can't be above criticism and scrutiny. But if US productions with content that could be equally offensive are ignored by contrast, then a double-standard is clearly in motion here, and that's very bad.

Still, Netflix has been losing subscriptions and money as a result of their vehement defense of the live action Cuties film, so hopefully, in time, this grimy adult cartoon Hoops will have been bounced out of the ball court along with much of the rest of their smutty lineup of adult productions.

Good points here from Mr Green.

If it's of any consolation, I definitely think that Europe and, yes, even here in America, we should stop that crap as much as with Anime. If it's bad for the goose, it's bad for the gander as well. And I've always felt that.
