Warner Brothers turns Scooby Doo cast member Velma into lesbian

In another example of how Warner Brothers can be as bad a studio as Disney these days, Variety reports they've tinkered with the Hanna-Barbera created cartoon Scooby Doo's characters, and changed the bespectacled Velma into a lesbian:
Velma is officially a lesbian.

Clips from the brand new movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!,” which show the Mystery Inc. member googly-eyed and speechless when encountering costume designer Coco Diablo, have gone viral on Twitter, confirming suspicions held by the “Scooby” fan base for decades.

[...] It’s long been an open secret among fans and “Scooby-Doo” creatives that Velma is gay. Even James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the “Mystery Incorporated” series, have confirmed the character’s sexuality, but they were never able to make it official onscreen.

In 2020, Gunn tweeted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
Oh, look who's talking. The same filmmaker who was revealed to have made offensive comments on Twitter about sexual violence, World War 2 and September 11, yet Hollywood forgave him entirely, in sharp contrast to Roseanne Barr, who made barely one objectionable comment herself. This is yet another instance of their moral bankruptcy in continuation as they go around the bend.

And the claim of "suspicions" and "open secrets" is insulting beyond belief to the intellect, considering Velma's a fictional character who wasn't written that way in the original cartoons made from 1969 to the turn of the century. On which note, Breitbart says:
Tony Cervone, a producer of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated series also said back in 2020 that he tried to make Velma gay, too.

“I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why,” Cervone wrote on Instagram at the time. “There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”

While more recent producers, directors, writers, and animators have said that they always considered Velma to be gay, neither Joe Ruby nor Ken Spears, the original series creators from back in 1969, ever spoke up about their original intentions. Both Ruby and Spears died in 2020.

Velma is also slated for another makeover and is set to be turned into a South-Asian character when leftist actress and producer Mindy Kaling’s animated adult series, Velma, debuts sometime next year on HBO.

Kaling noted that she doesn’t care if people get upset that Velma is suddenly Pakistani or Indian.

“Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,” Kaling said when the character design was released. “If people freak out about that, I don’t care.”
So we have here yet another Hollywood performer who's insulting audiences and other parts of society, in addition to news of another race-swapping project in motion. It's also insulting to the memory of Ruby and Spears. If they never said they wanted to establish Velma as a lesbian, then nobody should be acting like it was.

This also compounds just how unintelligable and detached from reality Variety's become, yet what could you expect from a trade journal that's distorted the pronouns of a actor who became a criminal? Nobody with common sense should buy their print and online editions with the way they're going.
