Actor from Captain America movies addresses superhero adaptations waning in quality

Collider reports Chris Evans, the actor who played Captain America in the past decade, is defending the superhero genre, but admits there's difficulties making it work well at this point:
It's fair to say comic book movies have taken something of a kicking lately, but they've gotten themselves a familiar looking bit of back-up support in the shape of the Star Spangled Man with a Plan, Chris Evans. Although Evans, who played Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, has since hung up his Stars and Stripes shield for good, he still took the time to defend the genre — although not without pouring a few flames on the fire first.

[...] In comments from the Emerald City Comic Con, where Evans was being interviewed about his career — first reported by the Disney fan site LaughingPlace.com — the actor stated that, while he wasn't trying to criticize anyone's work, it wasn't as simple as it looked.

"[Making superhero films isn't easy]. If it was easy, there'd be a lot more good ones - not trying to throw shade. Some Marvel projects are objectively phenomenal films."
I think it's worth wondering if he feels the same way about superhero comics. Considering how bad the Big Two became since the turn of the century - a sad situation that doesn't look likely to change anytime soon - how come these Hollywood actors can't find the time to make a statement about the source material? One answer is because they likely don't bother to read a lot of the industry output, neither old nor new. Yet even if they did read the latter, chances are they'd still be unwilling to acknowledge something went wrong, and that some of the brand new post-2000 stories that've been used for movie wellsprings are very bad. Another reason is because, chances are they've never really cared about the well-being of comicdom; only live action movies matter to their egos.

It also doesn't sound like Evans is critical of the film studios for "going woke" in their approach to filmmaking, so whatever point he's trying to make only comes out soggy. Let's be clear. What should really matter are the comics, not some live action movie that's bound to be forgotten within less than a decade.

  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
