The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Marvel celebrates villainy in another weary event

There may have once been a paperback published over a decade ago reprinting several of Marvel's most notable stories with villains titled "Bring on the Bad Guys". Now, in another event not unlike the time DC put out one titled Forever Evil, Marvel's publishing an event titled Bring on the Bad Guys, as announced by Superhero Hype:
Marvel Comics is famed for having some of the greatest villains in modern mythology. Usually, it is their lot to play a supporting role. For the most part, they exist only to make the good guys look good. This summer, however, the bad guys will be given the spotlight rather than stealing it, in Bring on the Bad Guys.

Bring on the Bad Guys is the brainchild of Emmy Award winning writer Marc Guggenheim. The story finds Mephisto, the Lord of Lies, enacting a scheme to increase his power. This leads him to recruit some wicked souls to do his dirty work. However, when those wicked souls include former enemies like Doctor Doom and Loki, the devil may not get his due.

What Marvel villains will join Doctor Doom and Loki?

The first chapter of Bring on the Bad Guys centers around Mephisto’s recruitment of Doctor Doom. This promises to be quite the caper, given Doom’s many battles with Mephisto to free his mother’s soul from Hell. It will be written by Marc Guggenheim, with art by Steafno Raffaele.

Subsequent chapters will center around Green Goblin, Abomination, Loki, Red Skull and Dormammu. The final chapter, which will also be written by Guggenheim, will reveal Mephisto’s grand design and the final fruition of his scheming.
Once again, villainy's pushed to the forefront at the expense of heroism. Some of the most notable villains in the MCU may be portrayed as "morally gray", but there are still those who are murderous, like Red Skull and Bullseye, who weren't portrayed as honorable, but in any case, this is another sad example of how villains are considered a big deal instead of heroism. Plus, let's not forget the Goblin, Norman Osborn, was originally portrayed murdering Gwen Stacy by pushing her off a bridge in NYC in Spider-Man during 1973. Indeed, it's offensive at this point how the Goblin is being excused despite the crime he was written committing in the Bronze Age, presumably because he was only written committing one murder, and it's also offensive when civilian characters on the good side are forced into similar roles, and they by sharp contrast don't get any such breaks. Also note how an overrated Hollywood producer is credited as the writer of this story.

This may not even be the first time Marvel did such an event spotlighting villains in modern times (and if memory serves, they published a brief series titled Supervillain Team-Up in the late 1970s), but it certainly isn't doing any favors for Marvel's collapsed image. Another storyline from the present that we could do without, and shouldn't support at all.
