Newly elected California Democrat takes office oath over a rare back issue of Superman's first spinoff series from 1939

Here's some weird news on the New York Post about a California Democrat, Robert Garcia, who's taken his oath of office not with a copy of the Bible, but rather, a rare copy of Superman #1 from 1939:
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s — Congressman-elect Robert Garcia.

One of the newest arrivals in Washington will swear to “bear true faith and allegiance” to the US Constitution — on one of the rarest and most valuable comic books in the world.

The California Democrat will hold the rare “Superman” comic along with a copy of the founding document, a photo of his late parents and his citizenship certificate as he takes the House of Representatives oath, his office told The Post on Tuesday. [...]

“Congressman Garcia learned to read and write in English by reading Superman comics so it’s especially exciting he was able to borrow this rare copy from the kind folks at the Library of Congress,” Guerrero added.

The pristine comic, published in the summer of 1939, was spotted Tuesday along with other sacred texts that lawmakers will use to pledge allegiance to truth, justice and the American way. [...]

The incoming congressman, 45, could barely contain his enthusiasm after his November election victory when he realized his new job would allow him access to the largest comic collection in America.
One of the commentors at Fox News' coverage of this report thought it ludicrous the guy's obscuring the Bible for this, and maybe there's a point to that. Certainly, it's impressive he learned how to read by spending time reading the comics, but what's sad is that Garcia's bound to follow an ultra-liberal agenda, and not be very faithful to Truth, Justice and the American Way, as is the Superman slogan since the early 1940s. California's already approved only so much woke ideology, and Garcia's unlikely to oppose it. So what good does it do to claim he's a fan of the Man of Steel any more than Barack Obama claimed he's a collector of Spider-Man and Conan comics? These would-be collectors, alas, are never very faithful to the stories they say they've read.

  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
