USA Today spoke with Christy Marx, the animation writer who's writing the new rendition of Amethyst, and here's why she wanted the heroine to be 17 rather than 13-14:

"I wanted to go for more mature themes and a character old enough to handle those mature themes," says Marx, who has teamed on Sword of Sorcery with artist Aaron Lopresti. (The series also features a Beowulf tale by writer Tony Bedard and artist Jesus Saiz.)

"The original series couldn't seriously tackle romance or sex because Amy still had the mental and emotional development of a 13-year-old. I didn't want to have that restriction."

I don't know about sex, but I don't see how making her 13 on planet Earth would make it difficult to open the possibilities for romance, since plenty of youngsters can begin at that age.

Amy will have the ability to venture between Earth and Nilaa. She has an adventure set on Earth in the near future, but Marx wants to keep her mainly in her new environment. (She will again be interacting with John Constantine, who appeared in the zero, when she stops by the Justice League Dark series.)

If this is how they thought to set it up, I'm not sure why it had to open on Earth in the first place, since it makes the attempted rape of a schoolmate in the first story seem more trivial than it had to be. Yet at the same time, they're hinting that it will go a darker route just by featuring a guest role in JL Dark.
