Why did Disney want to go after Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta's Starstruck when they don't own it?

Several days ago, artist Steve Bissette wrote about Disney sending a cease-and-desist letter to Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta over Starstruck, a creator owned book they published under Marvel's now defunct Epic imprint in the mid-80s, and later with companies like IDW. They've since resolved the matter, thanks to the legal documents they have for ownership, but this is still very disappointing to hear that Disney (and Marvel) is now giving off the impression they're greedy to get their hands on anything they think that can just because they now own the company that used the original imprint in the first place. Especially considering they don't seem to have any interest in making movies based on Lee and Kaluta's Starstruck.

After nearly 4 years, it's pretty clear that Disney's buying ownership in Marvel is not working out for the better.

South Park episode "The Ring" sums Disney up perfectly. Particularly Mickey breathing fire and then returning "to Valhalla to sleep and feed".

  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
