Is digital distribution really helping DC and Marvel's sales?

The New York Times (via Smart Planet) wrote about how various companies are taking advantage of Comixology's platform for comics on tablets. It may be making money, but how much is it really making for DC and Marvel? This is another article that's slippery on exact details, and first, it says:
Working with partners like comiXology on distribution allows DC to better focus on producing good stories, said Jim Lee, the co-publisher of DC Entertainment, adding, “The Holy Grail was the distribution issue.”
Lee is being as quixotic - and dishonest - as usual. They haven't focused on good storytelling for years, and they're not bound to even if they make this kind of a jump to a new platform. Mainly because people like him with their lack of interest in solid storytelling are in charge.
DC said it had been able to take advantage of the new distribution model to reach new readers. Thirty percent of readers of Injustice, a book based on a video game, were new to comic books, Mr. Lee said.
I haven't found any specific reader numbers, and without them, all their blab about 30 percent means nothing. If the net surfers have to pay to access the material, and prices are high even for computer programs, I'm not sure anybody wants to pay to read so much brand new garbage being published by DC and Marvel today. Once they discover that the modern stories aren't worth the megabytes they're being printed on, they could feel discouraged.
