10 things What Culture doesn't think would turn up in a DC movieverse
One of the more famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) Hal Jordan storylines concerns his transformation into the villainous Parallax. Driven to insanity by the destruction of his hometown of Coast City – along with 7 million inhabitants – Jordan believes he can harness the power of the entire Green Lantern Corps and restore Coast City permanently. To attain this power, Hal basically goes on a killing spree. They seem to have forgotten what happened a few years ago. While it's true this kind of nonsense would not make for a good screenplay, given how rushed, forced and nasty it was to start with two decades ago, Parallax did turn up in the already abortive 2011 movie, the change to a separate entity notwithstanding. And that alone is still cringe-inducing, because it draws from one of the worst moments in history, something that should have been put to rest long ago.
And how does Parallax even make a good name for a villain? The very word means apparent displacement of an observed object due to a change in the position of the observer. That might describe Hal as a changed man, but becomes pretty meaningless as a villain's name on its own. It's no wonder nobody could possibly be thrilled about a movie that drew from the cheapest of tales for a screenplay.
