The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Spider-Woman's dull new costume

Jessica Drew is getting a new costume design:
Take note, superhero fashionistas: Spider-Woman's spinning her hippest look ever.
Not with the garish looking art accompanying her, I'm afraid. The artwork reminds me of the final year or so of the original X-Force (a title that was nothing to write home about), and is just another example of art that doesn't suit superhero comics.
After nearly 40 years of the same red-and-yellow curve-hugging tights, Marvel Comics superheroine Jessica Drew is getting a modern makeover. A new costume designed by artist Kris Anka can be seen beginning today when Spider-Woman debuts as a playable character in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game, and the fresh threads will be seen on comic-book pages in March when the character begins a new direction in her life in the recently launched Spider-Woman solo series.

"As much as I'm a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while," says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe.
But she still needs talented writing, which people like him sorely lack. Costume designs alone are no substitute, and I don't see why the costumes are a bigger deal than the characterization, which is far more crucial. It brings to mind 1997's "electric Superman" costume design, which nobody asked for.

This is just another example of editors and artists spending too much time worrying about outfits that were successful in the beginning, and ignoring the famous expression, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Was wondering if I was the only one who thought it looked like Liefeld circa 1990.

Looks to me like they're playing copycat on Batgirl's new duds over in the *PEW* 52.
