Ars Technica wrote about the history of clashes between superheroes, and it even includes fights involving Joe Palooka and Lil' Abner, among the several other tales published in the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages. The only one that's probably unworthy is the DC vs. Marvel mini from 1996, since it's co-written by none other than Ron Marz, although Peter David is also co-writer.
