The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

A former video games executive is the wrong person to serve as a top executive for DC

The Hollywood Reporter announced that a former executive for Activision has been chosen to serve as a vice president and general manager for DC, and he gives the usual knee-jerk narrative:
Daniel Cherry, who hails from the world of esports, has been named senior vp and general manager of DC Comics.

In the newly created position, the executive, who is coming from video game behemoth Activision Blizzard where he acted as chief marketing officer of its Esports division, will head up business affairs editorial, talent services, marketing, sales, brand and direct to consumer for DC. He will also oversee business development with current senior vp business strategy, finance and administration, Anne DePies. [...]

Cherry said he discovered the job of comics from his father and referenced wanting to build DC knowing he was standing on the shoulders of like Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Neal Adams and Harry Lampert, among other creators.

“While always respecting the past, I also think it’s our responsibility to leverage the cultural power of the DC Comics to entertain and inspire an increasingly diverse global fan base,” Cherry said in a statement. "Comics have the power to create unique imagery and narratives that can move the world toward a better, more inclusive version of itself. It’s my sincere hope that I am able to contribute and help evolve the brand and its relevance for generations to come.”
I'm sorry, but that's only code for confirming they won't respect the past, and have every intention of going out of their way to pander to more left-wing social justice mentality. Speaking of which, when I checked Cherry's Twitter page, he indicated he supports BLM propaganda. I think that says quite a bit about what kind of man they've hired for the job, one who, curiously enough, may have left Siegel and Shuster out of his statement for what he wants DC to know, because Batman's creators are somehow more important. But, no surprise here. The higher echelons aren't exactly known for welcoming right-leaning business executives into their ranks.

I'm not optimistic about what DC has in store with somebody like Cherry taking up an executive position here, mostly because, like Dan DiDio, he too comes from a background that doesn't involve literature or science fiction writing for books. If there's no background in fantasy research applied to books, that's why such people are unqualified.

In all fairness, even if they DID have such a background, there's no guarantee that they're qualified. From my personal experience, I had a professor who has a literature background (even having a doctorate on literature, not sure why that exists), yet despite that he used his literature courses to push discussions on how Christians were misogynistic and praising the Free Sex of the sixties and lamenting the failure of the Equal Rights Amendment. And don't get me started on Grover Furr.
