Brian Bendis is jumping ship from DC/Marvel to Dark Horse

The Hollywood Reporter announced the overrated Bendis is following in the footsteps of a number of other writers who until now worked for the Big 2, and is moving his creator-owned Jinxworld imprint to Dark Horse:
Jinxworld, the creator-owned comic book imprint from comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis, is finding a new home at Dark Horse. As part of the move, Bendis and Dark Horse are issuing new editions of previous titles such as Powers, and introducing Joy Operations, a new creator-owned title described as an ambitious science-fiction odyssey.
Which no sane person need waste their money on. I guess he figures he's inflicted more than enough damage upon both Marvel and DC, so he's departing while surely laughing behind everyone's back. One of the reasons he's leaving now:
Bendis become a star writer thanks to his work at Marvel in the 2000s, where his Avengers comics helped inspire the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also co-created Miles Morales and Jessica Jones, among many major contributions to the mythos. Bendis turned heads in 2017 with a deal that took him to DC, which became home to Jinxworld. His exclusive deal with DC ended earlier this year.
And this is one of the reasons why I wasn't up to watching the movies at the time, and am hugely disappointed with those who did. All these terrible comics like Avengers: Disassembled and House of M, written since the turn of the century by sleazebags like Bendis, and most people outside comicdom proper, who solely care about movies and TV, had no idea or couldn't comprehend how reprehensible they truly were, reducing Scarlet Witch to a one-dimensional lunatic (let's also remember he was behind the LGBT retcon to Iceman), and few people in comicdom or out ever complained, or insisted Marvel and DC be boycotted if that's what it took to put a stop to this abuse. As horrible as his work for DC was too, it's amazing Bendis' deal lasted far less time than his work at Marvel did, which must've been nearly 15 years.
While Bendis has made big waves in the superhero space over the past two decades, Jinxworld has been an opportunity for him to explore realms outside the worlds of superheroes, with him planting the seeds for what became Jinxworld in the mid-’90s.
What? Does this mean all of a sudden, he's got an interest again in exploring non-superhero tales? While the superhero genre has indeed been way overused and milked dry, while providing nothing thoughtful in the modern era, anything Bendis writes is bound to be a bad investment, and after all the harm he caused to the Big 2, that's why it's better not to put money in his pockets.

Bendis was one of a number of scribes working since the early 2000s who really dumbed down superhero fare, all for the sake of providing movies with groundswork on which build screenplays, which makes a mockery out of the better challenge of writing one's own screenplay based on these properties, doing research through the ages to see what works or doesn't in a film. His departure from the mainstream, if that's the case, is welcome, but tragically, that alone won't reverse the extensive shambles he left behind. And there's no chance Bendis is even the least bit sorry about it.

  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
