Dynamite Entertainment hired Rob Liefeld to draw a Thundercats variant cover
Dynamite Entertainment‘s ThunderCats comic is a tremendous success by any metric. Critically acclaimed, the first issue also sold over 180,000 copies. Indeed, the comic has sold so well that Dynamite has ordered a second printing, with a variant of the first printing’s Rob Liefeld cover. It sure looks as uninspired as many other samples from his laughable resume. But most regrettable is if anybody actually bought it. Let's be clear. Liefeld's art is not the classic the industry's most pretentious would like everyone to think it is. And Liefeld set such a poor example in his time that in the past decade led to some particularly horrific and pathetic examples of artwork the industry may never recover from if they keep normalizing this. What's so great about Liefeld's art that isn't so great about J. Scott Campbell's, Billy Tucci's and Brandon Peterson's? A real shame only so many publishers have decided to keep giving Liefeld work he's not qualified for. Could it be because Liefeld charges less for his farces than the aforementioned 3 do for their masterpieces? If so, that would only confirm how cheap some publishers want their artwork, and next thing you know, they'll resort to AI to save more money.
Rob Liefeld’s cover for the first printing depicted the ThunderCats leader, Lion-O, with the faces of Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara behind him. The variant cover for the second printing presents this cover with a unique “peel” effect. This showcases the original pencils, in contrast to the inks and colors of the original.
And let's not forget variant covers themselves do pose a serious problem of making the industry look desperate when they resort to them. When here, they could've long ago switched to paperback/hardcover and saved money plausibly, rather than continue resorting to pamphlets monthly.
