More news about what James Gunn's take on Peacemaker is like
0 Comments Published by Avi Green on Sunday, October 05, 2025 at 9:54 AM.Last night's episode of Peacemaker season 2 opened with Chris Smith finally realising that all is not as it seems on Earth-X. Emilia Harcourt points out that every desk has a copy of Mein Kampf on it, while there's even a mural in A.R.G.U.S. of Adolf Hitler in the U.S. Capitol. If they were making jokes about Nazism and Mein Kamph, let's be clear. It's not really something to joke about, nor for that matter is Islamic jihadism. Mainly because of all the horrific influence it's had in the Islamic world, including in the Gaza strip. I'm amazed they actually decided to edit out jokes involving nazism, but maybe that's because they thought it was far more noticeable than the perverse sex/rape jokes that were made in the episode involving Lex Luthor. And if Gunn really didn't think the Hitler joke was appropriate, why does he think the leftist metaphors in his Superman film are acceptable?
However, it turns out the scene originally had one more sight gag, which filmmaker James Gunn decided to leave on the cutting room floor.
Talking on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn, the DC Studios co-CEO revealed that he cut a scene showing several A.R.G.U.S. workers rocking Hitler moustaches.
"They actually had a bunch of the guys shave Hitler moustaches, and they had to keep these on them for days while we were shooting," Jennifer Holland pointed out.
That prompted Gunn to chime in with, "Harcourt says to Peacemaker, 'You don't notice the copies of Mein Kampf on every desk?' And then she points to these guys standing next to the copier and says, 'What about all those stupid little moustaches?' And there's all these guys with Hitler moustaches. The lame little moustaches looked too cartoony for me, so I cut it."
Our visit to Earth-X ended up being a little more comedic than expected, and "Like a Keith in the Night" wasn't quite the harrowing exploration of this alternate reality that many fans expected.
What's described in the Peacemaker episode sounds revolting enough as it is, and I'd rather stay far away from anything Gunn oversaw as a filmmaker at this point. If they say the Earth-X episode is "comedic", that's actually telling what's long gone wrong with comedy today, in a world where over the past decade, other jokes that could've been tamer by comparison were damned by the woke crowd, and comedians had their creativity damaged as a result. Gunn's done little more than lower the bar on pop culture, seeing how he went laughably out of his way to adapt Saturday morning cartoons like Scooby-Doo to live action film with special effects. That's another something we really didn't need, and with the way the DC movieverse has gone, we don't need that either.
Update: Warner Todd Huston at Breitbart reveals the script for Peacemaker is actually worse than what's been told so far:
Superman director James Gunn’s second season of his HBO series Peacemaker is being ripped for its tone-deaf themes portraying an America run by Nazis who supposedly love Jesus.Well this too is an utter embarrassment and humiliation, and it makes clear how unserious Gunn and company are about dealing with metaphors for real life issues. If there's going to be a cinematic sequel to Superman in coming years, I dread to think what it'll be like, ditto the planned Supergirl film. It won't be shocking at all if they force something really repulsive upon the Girl of Steel as much as they already did her cousin. No wonder the DC franchise long collapsed in the past quarter century.
The latest season was already given a controversial launch with star John Cena engaging in a bisexual orgy.
The series, conceived and written by Gunn himself, is an adults-only affair, with gritty violence, sexual themes, racism, and rough language. And after a three and a half year wait, fans are now getting season two.
With the sixth episode now streaming, many are slamming Gunn for his head-on attack against conservatives, Christians, and white people, especially in the wake of the brutal murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Season two’s big reveal is that in an alternate universe, the United States has been taken over by Nazis. And not figuratively, either. The “new” flag in Gunn’s America even has a Nazi swastika where the stars should be.
As Giant Freakin Robot’s Joshua Taylor pointed out, the plot is already driving left-wingers to social media to claim that Gunn is showing America as it is today and driving our real-life political rhetoric into more viciousness and dehumanizing, which will surely “push lunatics towards more real-life political violence.”
