WB is working again on a Justice League movie, but is America included in the team's name?
While Disney and Marvel were busy shooting "The Avengers" last year, Warner Brothers quietly began getting its own all-star superhero pic back on track, tapping "Gangster Squad" scribe Will Beall to write "Justice League," based on the WB-controlled stable of DC Comics superheroes.Okay, so far, this doesn't sound like it'll be the work of a busload of screenwriters, just one of the problems with the abortive Green Lantern movie last year. Just one writer is better. But there's just one little thing I noticed here: where is the name America in the project title? Indeed, nowhere in that news article does the word America seem to appear, suggesting they're going to do all this according to political correctness, again, just like the newest Superman movie might end up becoming. Even as an acronym, Justice League of America was usually the most recognized titling for the team book for many years, and the most appreciated too, and if they don't follow through on that, it's quite possible that public enthusiasm won't be as big for a League movie as WB is probably hoping. How is it that of all the DC Comics-to-movies that have been produced in the past decade, only the new takes on Batman have avoided being hampered by decadence?
So far, any screenplay they're writing for a League movie is only in beginning stages, so clearly, we'll have to wait and hope that it does turn out okay in the end, and that maybe they will make it Justice League of America after all. But judging from Time Warner's track record, there's always reason to be wary that they really are so deeply entrenched with PC that a League movie could also end up a victim of their thinking.
Update: Yahoo's movies section wrote about this and reported that Mark Millar told the following:
Mark Millar, the writer who created the comic books the inspired the movies "Wanted" and "Kick-Ass," posted on his official website MillarWorld.tv that someone he knows is friends with screenwriter Will Beall and got a peek at the unfinished "Justice League" script. Millar reported that the new take on the movie is "Very real-world and not at all what you might expect." He said Beall began working on the script before "The Avengers" hit theaters, and that the "tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn't what I expected."With WB's track record, that could very easily spell bad news.
Labels: dc comics, Justice League of America, politics
While we are old enought to remember the importance of "The Justice League of America." There is a huge amount of movie going folks age 16-40 (the target audience filmmakers aim for in the current age, yes a pun!)
Only now of them from the cartoon series Justice League, Justice League Unlimited. No America in the names. Sometimes no America is just no need for America being added.
Sorry Mr. Freud.

They are probably avoiding the word "America" to maximize profits world wide. They did a similar thing with the Captain America movie by avoiding or minimizing Nazi references and making Red Skull the leader of Hydra. As a result, the movie would be (and probably was) more successful in Europe. Bottom line I think the pursuit of the almighty $$$ is behind any decision to leave off "America" from the title, not political correctness.

I don't see the poin in taking "America" out of the title. Who cares if politically correct foreign audiences are "offended?" People today are too easily "offended."
