Marvel's Original Sin crossover kills off Uatu the Watcher

Still obsessed as they are with using minor (and major) characters as plot devices, Marvel's staff has rubbed out Uatu the Watcher in their latest crossover:
The premise of Original Sin (and Identity Crisis) also sounds like a tactic used in politics and press: to "get the dirt" on the politicians. Here, it's just an excuse to soil all the heroes and co-stars whom sane people wanted to like, and the publishers don't.
And what's so wrong with Uatu that makes them want to use him as a plot device in such an awful idea?
A murder mystery is afoot in the Marvel Universe.Sounds fairly similar to Identity Crisis. While reading this, it also brought to mind something I've never been sure about: back in 1994, when DC published Emerald Twilight and Zero Hour, did the Earthbound public know that Hal Jordan had gone berserk and slaughtered thousands of GLC members? I'm not sure if that was ever public knowledge in the DCU at the time, which is pretty absurd in a way, because it enforces a vision of superhero worlds as a very insular, secretive place where some things just aren't told to anybody not part of them, no matter how much the heroes detest such acts. It's also very stupid.
When the all-seeing, all-knowing Uatu the Watcher is found dead in his lunar lair, the Avengers and the rest of Earth's superheroes scramble to keep their deepest and darkest secrets from being revealed, in Marvel Comics' annual major crossover event Original Sin, launching in May.
"It's all the skeletons, all the dark things that you never know, all the interesting and intriguing information — not all of it even bad," says Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort. "And it will all expand out into dozens of stories that will cut to the core of who these characters are."

Yawn. Hard to care who kills someone when you know they aren't going to stay dead. He'll be back in a few months, two years at the outside.
