Waid and Simone are giving a bad impression of themselves to the ladies
Here's the reason why the legislation was submitted (via Hot Air):
The North Carolina legislature on Wednesday passed a sweeping bill overturning gay and transgender protections at the local level and requiring students to use public restrooms that correspond to their biological sex.As I'd noted before, suppose this madness extended to the bathrooms at comics conventions? We've seen lamentations in the past about ladies lacking in fandom. Allowing transgenders access to the restrooms for the opposite sex could open the door to predators claiming to be LGBTs ensuring it'd remain that way. So Waid, are you sure you want to support a standing that could lead to fangirls making snake eyes at you?
Gov. Pat McCrory, a former Charlotte mayor, signed the bill hours later, according to the Associated Press.
State lawmakers pushed the measure in response to a nondiscrimination ordinance adopted in the city of Charlotte that, among other things, allowed people to use the bathroom that matched with their gender identity. Legislators said immediate action was necessary to protect children and women from sexual predators who might pose as transgender to gain access to women’s restrooms.
Then, in response to a tweet by Pat McCrory about why he supported this protective legislature, Waid said:
"Also to gut those pesky child labor laws that benefit the tobacco industry." https://t.co/rsBjnKjd71— Mark Waid (@MarkWaid) March 25, 2016
What kind of stupid gibberish is that? Smoking cigarettes is peanuts compared to the issue of sexual harassment. Or is he accusing him of supposed slavery just to draw attention away from the main subject? Very poor.
He also responded to this Tennessee GOP about a shooting in Wash. DC where they wondered if the culprit was Muslim, by saying:
Stop salivating at the possibility, you assholes. Obviously you LONG for it to be a Muslim, but restrain yourselves. https://t.co/17DkoB622f— Mark Waid (@MarkWaid) March 28, 2016
I think Waid wants/hopes the GOP members will always blame Islam because that way he can accuse them of overreacting. Which makes him an opportunist in his own way. It's mighty rich of him to accuse them of salivation when he's proven himself just as bad as the real life J. Jonah Jamesons out there. How ironic that a man who accuses the Gamergate campaign of alleged harassment has no problem with a political position that enables worse in real life.
Yet when it comes to the primary subject here, none of his position may be as disturbing as Gail Simone's apparent support for allowing just about anybody to use the ladies' room:
Look at this despicable response. Holy shit, @patmccrorync is an awful, awful human being and public servant. https://t.co/c2K9rd8Whm— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 28, 2016
You know, "OTHER CITIES ARE JUST AS BIGOTED AS WE ARE!" is a terrible defense, @patmccrorync. https://t.co/R514yFH0xz— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 28, 2016
To @patmccrorync, pandering to a tiny base of bigots based on a 100% fictional fear is more important than the safety and prosperity of NC.— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
You have consistently lied about what is in this bill and people are not as ignorant as you hoped. https://t.co/mpAq2q6cw3— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
And just a reminder that the excellent and popular @NC_Comicon has come out FIRMLY 100% AGAINST @patmccrory's bigoted law. Good job, guys!— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
Wow...I think she's just explained why she's one of the few women who're currently working with the majors, and maybe even the minors. And why the convention may not get many girl attendees in the future, should they approve bad measures in the halls.
This might be the saddest tweet in history.— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
This guy cannot stop embarrassing himself and his state. https://t.co/8TLBNruQQv
So, https://t.co/2cVerD5VC8 is full of lies, as is its sponsor, @patmccrorync. It doesn't even MENTION the other odious components.— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
Would you approve of other state legislators using the shady tactics you used to get this law passed without debate? https://t.co/mpAq2q6cw3— GAIL SIMONE (@GailSimone) March 30, 2016
Would you consider this woman an ideal role model for your daughter? She has just demonstrated why no sensible lady should consult with her on serious issues. This reminds me that writer Alex deCampi (via Nerdspan) complained a few months ago about sexual harassment being tolerated at the Big Two:
I’m also talking about it because man, I am sick to death of corporate comics telling me they caaare about me and my lady-dollar as a reader, and then continuing to employ / protect known harassers. Kids, there are five known big-name, vindictive harassers in comics, and about three bad drunks. Two harassers are writers employed by DC; one is a DC editor; two are writers employed by Marvel. [...]And not just the managements: even some of the freelancers and other contributors have to shoulder blame for ignoring the terrible cases, to say nothing of upholding causes that lead to similar problems, as Waid and Simone have demonstrated here. I'm sure some people of deCampi's standing may realize some of the worst ignoramuses out there come from the writers/artists division, and can't be trusted to help one bit. Suppose the comics companies start allowing PC demands like the above at their offices, and it leads to more awful experiences that they won't do anything to prevent? DeCampi's doing the right thing to protest.
The irony is that nothing will be done by DC and Marvel about these harassers, but I will be blacklisted (even more than I already am) at the Big Two. And I do not care. While I have great affection for some of the characters owned by these companies, and love many of the creators and editors who work there, these corporations have repeatedly shown to me over 2015 that their senior management’s values and priorities are not a good fit with my values and priorities.
Also, if Waid and Simone are still obsessed with pandering to SJWs overs bathrooms, they may want to consider what a rape survivor had to say recently about the subject in The Federalist:
Victimizers Use Any Opening They Can FindSee, this is exactly what Waid, Simone and the convention center vehemently refuse to consider: the safety of women/children. And even transgenders aren't saints; there are some who could exploit weaknesses to traumatize innocent people. Good grief, does Simone, as a woman, really want predators of any background to gain a foothold that could enable them to terrorize women, in public restrooms or even conventions? Tsk tsk. She has really topped herself this time. This is why, in hindsight, I think it was for the best if she lost the job writing Birds of Prey. A woman who can't consider the long ranging repercussions from upholding demands that have the potential to lead to harassment has no business writing the adventures of a women who're supposed to be inspirational for everyone. If memory serves, Simone recently wrote a Tomb Raider story for Dark Horse, and had nothing to say about Scott Allie's treachery any more than any other would-be professional. I would strongly advise all women who'd like to find jobs in comicdom not to seek advice on serious subjects from people like Waid and Simone, who've both clearly gone round the bend, and possibly cheapened the impact of some of their earlier writing assignments. If there's anything we can learn from this topic, it's that the ignorance of men and women like Waid/Simone makes them unsuitable role models for women, children, or anybody with rationale. We've also learned quite a bit about Waid over the past years - he's rude to women, and it's clear he just makes accusations of sexism when it suits his absurd positions. It's regrettable they have to go down such tasteless routes, and perpetuate a dreadful image for the medium.
I read these reports, and my heart starts to race. They can’t be serious. Let me be clear: I am not saying that transgender people are predators. Not by a long shot. What I am saying is that there are countless deviant men in this world who will pretend to be transgender as a means of gaining access to the people they want to exploit, namely women and children. It already happens. Just Google Jason Pomares, Norwood Smith Burnes, or Taylor Buehler, for starters.
While I feel a deep sense of empathy for what must be a very difficult situation for transgender people, at the beginning and end of the day, it is nothing short of negligent to instate policies that elevate the emotional comfort of a relative few over the physical safety of a large group of vulnerable people.
Don’t they know anything about predators? Don’t they know the numbers? That out of every 100 rapes, only two rapists will spend so much as single day in jail while the other 98 walk free and hang out in our midst? Don’t they know that predators are known to intentionally seek out places where many of their preferred targets gather in groups? That perpetrators are addicts so committed to their fantasies they’ll stop at nothing to achieve them?
Do they know that more than 99 percent of single-victim incidents are committed by males? That they are experts in rationalization who minimize their number of victims? Don’t they know that insurance companies highlight locker rooms as a high-risk area for abuse that should be carefully monitored and protected?
Don’t they know that one out of every four little girls will be sexually abused during childhood, and that’s without giving predators free access to them while they shower? Don’t they know that, for women who have experienced sexual trauma, finding the courage to use a locker room at all is a freaking badge of honor? That many of these women view life through a kaleidoscope of shame and suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, dissociation, poor body image, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, difficulty with intimacy, and worse?
Why would people knowingly invite further exploitation by creating policies with no safeguards in place to protect them from injury? With zero screening options to ensure that biological males who enter locker rooms actually identify as female, how could a woman be sure the person staring at her wasn’t exploiting her? Why is it okay to make her wonder?
