Denny O'Neil is being honored at the wrong place

Veteran Denny O'Neil will receive an honor for dealing with "peace and justice" through comics stories, as he did when he was writing Batman and Green Lantern/Arrow. However, there's a sad side to all this:
On December 7th and 8th, O’Neil will be honored for his “lifetime of achievements in pursuing causes of peace and justice” during an appearance at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta.
Well this is a shame it's being done at an institution dedicated to one of the worst presidents in history, whose biggest mistakes include how he allowed the ayatollah to take over Iran in 1979, something even the far-left Washington Post was willing to admit. As if that weren't bad enough:
For his appearance at the Carter Presidential Library, O’Neil will discuss his life, tracing how his discharge from the Navy led to his work in newspapers and later comic books.

“I accepted their invitation, because hell, Jimmy Carter, for my money, is our best ex-president,” O’Neil said.
Oh, for crying out loud! How does that make sense when he lost to Ronald Reagan after one term by a wide margin? Carter did quite a bit of damage that's still bound to take eons to repair.

This article does tell something interesting about O'Neil's past though, that I don't think I'd been fully aware of until now:
According O’Neil, the decision to attack various real-world problems through comic book stories came about because he was aware of his own addiction problems and was hanging around areas of New York where many down-and-out people congregated during that time.
Wow, so he suffered drug addiction too during the 60s? I can't remember reading about his telling that before, so I will give him some credit for recognizing why drug addiction is awful and hazardous to the health. Evidently, this is why he was determined to follow up on Stan Lee's story from Spider-Man in the pages of Green Lantern/Green Arrow.

Even so, it's a shame O'Neil's associating himself with one of the worst politicians in history by accepting an honor at his worthless center. That kind of acceptance is why his work can wind up having to be taken with a grain of salt.

The opinion piece in the Washington Post says nothing about how Carter 'allowed' Khomeini to take over Iran. Instead, it talks about how
Carter’s decision to admit the deposed Shah to America for medical treatment poisoned relationships between the US and the Khomeini regime. The article says straight out that Khomeini consolidated power before Carter’s decision.

O’Neill says that Carter was our best ex-president; not our best president. The ex shows you what he is thinking. A lot of people who don’t like his presidency have been impressed by the depth and extent of his international humanitarian work after his presidency ended.

You really won't like what went on behind those sunny suburban scenes from the 50s and 60s Green.
