J. Michael Straczynski sadly returns to write a Spidey story

Superhero Hype announced there's a new Spider-Man anthology special being published focused on the 80s era of the black symbiote costume, and look who one of the contributing writers is:
The second story finds Peter Parker coping with a vestige of the symbiote that stayed dormant for years, waiting to attack when his guard was down. This story will be scripted by J. Michael Straczynski. The art will be provided by artist Sumit Kumar in their Marvel Comics debut. Finally, Dustin Nguyen will write and draw a spine-tingling story about Spider-Man being hunted by an unseen enemy.
What a groaner. JMS was never qualified to write any of these creations, definitely not since the turn of the century, and now, following his pretentious setups for Captain America, he shows up again at the Spidey doorstep, and is bound to be as unfaithful to the wall-crawler's history as he was before. It won't be shocking if, at this point, he not only doesn't make use of Mary Jane Watson, faithfully or otherwise, but doesn't care either.

What this makes clear is that Marvel is way past the point where they could excite anybody in the know how awful JMS's Spidey run was over 2 decades ago. What true Spidey fan wants to check out a story by an overrated Hollywooder who could only think of "getting inside Peter Parker's head", and whose pretentious run ended with the Spider-marriage dismantled? This new special is not something to care about, and anybody who liked the 80s era would do better to search for the stories written in those times 4 decades ago, whether in pamphlets or paperback/hardcover reprints.

  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
