Garth Ennis launches publishing brand for the sake of emphasizing the horror genre

Over a week ago, Deadline announced the overrated Ennis was launching his own publishing imprint at Image for the sake of specializing in the horror genre:
The Boys comics co-creator Garth Ennis and former The Equalizer co-showrunner Adam Glass are among the co-founders of Ninth Circle, a new comic book publisher focused on the horror genre, which has set horror comedy Freddie The Fix as its first title.

Ninth Circle, whose co-founders also include writers Marguerite Bennett (DC’s Bombshells), Joe Pruett (Negative Burn) and Ram V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr), launches as an imprint of Image Comics. Rounding out the leadership team is ABGO’s Michael Bogner and TFC Management’s David Stone. Ninth Circle’s lead investor Kimberly Steward (Manchester By The Sea, Suspiria), and her K Period Media production company will partner with Ninth Circle to produce select titles.

[...] “Ninth Circle is all about embracing the horror genre in all its forms,” Glass said. “With Garth’s unparalleled ability to craft unforgettable worlds; Ram, Marguerite and Joe’s daring eye for pushing the boundaries of the medium; and my own experience in storytelling across multiple mediums, we can’t wait to share these stories with fans.”
It makes no difference whether they use comedy or not, this is just another sad, frustrating exercise in futility, emphasizing what's become a sad staple of modern entertainment, and has actually come more at the expense of comedy than anything else. We don't need more of this aggravating cliche. Not from Ennis, and not from other writers and artists either. If the audience will avoid paying good money for whatever Ninth Circle have in store, that'll be a good thing.

About me

  • I'm Avi Green
  • From Jerusalem, Israel
  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
