Zadzooks talks about Constantine's movie version
Joseph Szadkowski of the Washington Times talks about the movie version of Hellblazer, which starred Keanu Reeves:
I think the part in the second disc, with the stuff about the comic itself, is probably the better half:
The film did not attain blockbuster status even with Keanu Reeves starring as John Constantine, the heavy-smoking, working-class stiff who sends demons back to their fiery realms while dealing with a terminal case of lung cancer.I think the answer to that is that the studio (surprise, surprise) obviously never figured out how to market it in the first place, and thus only gave it limited release around the country. Not that I would worry, not ever having been a reader of the series to begin with. (I've read a modicum of Swamp Thing, where John Constantine first appeared, including the issue where he first debuted, but never his own ongoing series, which began three years after his debut.)
I think the part in the second disc, with the stuff about the comic itself, is probably the better half:
The second disc quickly makes up for the first with a 15-minute featurette, "Conjuring Constantine." In it, film creators try to explain how they wanted to present the spirit of the character when they should have just been true to the source material. While I may not be a reader of the series, I think I would take more interest in the interviews regarding the comics than in the movie itself, that's for sure.
—Thankfully, lots of great artwork from the comics is shown, and interviews with comics writer Jamie Delano and Vertigo editor Karen Berger provide much insight into Hellblazer and the groundbreaking DC Comics imprint, Vertigo.
