Scott Beatty was lucky
I could only find a brief of an article in the Altoona Mirror about this, but, Scott Beatty got his start on comics by staying behind sick and not going to see Star Wars in 1977:
ALEXANDRIA - Scott Beatty was laid up in a hospital bed with pneumonia in the spring of 1977 when "Star Wars" debuted.Well hey, let me assure you that were lucky to have stayed behind so that you could get your first look at comic books, Beatty. These days, as someone who reads more than he watches movies and TV, I'd say that was a most fortunate occurance.
But instead of meeting Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was introduced to Ritchie Rich, The Batman family and The Secret Society of Super-Villains.
"My grandfather took everyone to see 'Star Wars,' but I was in that bed. My dad bought these three comic books at the gift shop at J.C. Blair [Memorial Hospital], and after that, I was hooked," Beatty said.
