Tacoma News Tribune fawns over Brian Michael Bendis
The comic-book world has been like Never Never Land for Brian Michael Bendis. The top writer in the country, Bendis has not gone without having multiple titles on the top-10 sales lists for years. He has fans everywhere. And the popularity of his work has landed him TV, movie and video-game writing gigs.Oh my god, and he even has the chutzpah to sneer at his detractors. Predictably, not a word about Avengers: Disassembled or the misogyny that was stuffed into it, nor the leftist political themes Bendis contributed when they published Civil War. Just total fawning for the sake of an oh-so important writer and they even have the gall to title the article "King of Comics pays a visit".
But the Portland resident, who will visit Tacoma’s Comic Book Ink store today, keeps things in perspective.
“I’m very lucky,” he joked via phone earlier this week. “Things are going very well. ‘I Haven’t Been Fired Yet.’ That’s the tour’s name.”
Marvel has handed Bendis several projects over the past few years, and he is now at the helm of next summer’s “Secret Invasion” project, a cross-comic book story announced in October. But of course, they don't ask if the implied crossover he's going to helm is helping the industry on the long term.
