Joker film director pans outrage culture from the far-left, which attacked it for wrong reasons

In an interview with The Wrap (via Breitbart), director Todd Phillips took issue with leftists, of all people, who're attacking the film, not because it emphasizes a villain rather than a hero, but because it's something the Batman world was built upon - darkness and violence:
Phillips thinks that people as a whole are waiting for a target they can pounce on – and “Joker” may be an obvious one. And in this case, it’s not about the right-wing targeting Hollywood movies over guns – it’s broader than that.

“I think it’s because outrage is a commodity, I think it’s something that has been a commodity for a while,” he said. “What’s outstanding to me in this discourse in this movie is how easily the far left can sound like the far right when it suits their agenda. It’s really been eye opening for me.”
I have to say, pretty amazing he'd have the guts to do that, considering the studio echelons can be pretty far to the left themselves. And how strange the leftists he speaks of would wait until a movie like this to start yammering about darkness, rather than any Superman movie built far too much on the same, like Henry Cavill's.

And while this is an interesting discovery, I would like to argue that another issue the leftists failed to criticize this movie for was that it would emphasize a villain rather than a hero. Why, the left themselves led to this whole situation where higher value is placed upon villainy than heroism. But they only take offense when it's the wrong franchise. No wonder the DCU suffered so much forced darkness in the past decade, no thanks to Dan DiDio and his disastrous staff.
