The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

The right-leaning video game designer and comics artist/writer Doug TenNapel recently complained that DC's current publisher, Jim Lee, got Sean Gordon Murphy to withdraw a cover he was going to contribute to a Bigfoot Bill comic:
TenNapel further vocalized his own take on the situation in a series of tweets, which are shown in order here. "The LGBTQ put pressure on DC and [Murphy] for doing a cover on Bigfoot Bill 2," he wrote. "Sean and I agreed that he should pull the cover. It's more important than ever that pro-family comic lovers to support my work and rethink DC for attacking my business over my beliefs."

He continued, "This has nothing to do with the book. It's Jim Lee/DC that don't want [Murphy] to do a favor for a friend that goes against their SJW/LGBTQ brand. This isn't a fake culture war to get super-chats. This is a real culture war." TenNapel also said, "I don't blame Sean. I offered that he could pull the cover. It's hard to be a guy who makes friends choose to either do a cover or do a multi-million dollar label at DC. Bigfoot Bill 2 is going to be fine, but DC came after my business so I'm not going to be quiet about it." TenNapel claims he and Murphy are still on good terms.
He later retracted his accusations against Lee, but truly, how do we know he didn't have anything to do with it? Though Murphy certainly isn't doing himself any favors by associating with LGBT advocates hostile to free speech, something far too many leftist writers are doing in these times, and has become a sad staple of leftist MO of late.

All that aside, when I read about this, I couldn't help find it most hypocritical Lee may still be associating with Brad Meltzer, author of Identity Crisis, that 2004 miniseries that's offensive to victims of sexual assault, and last year, it was reported that:
DC co-publisher and comic book artist of certain repute Jim Lee revealed he will team with writer Brad Meltzer for a 8-page story in an unannonced, upcoming DC War 100-Page Special.
I don't know if this debuted yet, but I do know it's additionally ludicrous, nearly 3 years after the Weinstein scandal, which just saw the disgraced movie mogul sentenced to 23 years in prison for at least two of his repellent crimes, that Lee would continue to maintain any association with a writer who belittled serious issues in said 2004 miniseries. Lee has a lot of explaining to do, because if he caused any distress for TenNapel, this only makes it all the more disturbing.

If Lee wants to avoid any more controversy for the wrong reasons, he'd do well to distance himself from Meltzer in the forseeable future. After all the trouble DC caused by failing to rid themselves of Eddie Berganza, this case only makes Lee look all the more hypocritical.

But isn’t Lee doing exactlly what you always urge the publishers to do? That is, monitor the statements made and stands taken by creative free-lancers in their personal lives, tell them not to say or do things that will embarrass the company and hurt its circulation, and discipline them or fire them if the stands they take are not politically correct?
