Kurt Busiek loves the woke Barbie film
So we saw BARBIE, which was cheerfully subversive and lots of fun. It was very much a "message" movie, but rare that you get that in a movie this poppy. There were parts where I wish they'd gone for more than they did, but where it'd be hard to do without undercutting who the characters have to be.Wow, all the negativity towards "the patriarchy" actually resonated with him? It's admittedly odd coming from a scribe who in the past decade supported allowing transsexual men into women's private spaces like bathrooms. Alas, chances are, despite Busiek's gushing over this toy-based movie laced with unhealthy messages he won't even describe, he still doesn't regret taking positions in the past that were hurtful to women. And what's this about undercutting? That's just what the screenwriters did, for the sake of divisive messages alienating the sexes from each other.
Still, lots of fun.
With that said, from what I've seen of news on Barbie's box office grosses, it did go down in its 2nd week, even if it's just stateside, to just $93 million in receipts, though the AP Wire, which wrote that report, is certainly making an effort to pass it all off as a big deal, to say nothing of gush, gush, gush. This Barbie movie sure has turned out to be one of the most tasteless examples of adapting merchandise.
