Writers who worked for Marvel/DC get GI Joe assignments from Skybound
Red-hot writer Kelly Thompson (Black Widow, Birds of Prey) and artist Marco Ferrari (Frontiersman) introduce some of the most anticipated characters to the Energon Universe in ways you’ll never expect in Scarlett #1, launching June 5, 2024.Thompson was involved in some of the worst developments at Marvel/DC, like the woke approaches to Carol Danvers, and that's why this new take on Scarlett will have to be viewed cautiously, because who knows what Thompson might have in store? I'm also decidedly not happy about the emphasis put upon villains, here being Destro, who's also the subject of a miniseries:
“I’m incredibly excited to bring Destro to life with Andrei,” said Dan Watters. “This is going to be a visceral, explosive thriller in which he [Destro] isn’t very nice to anyone at all — everything you’d want from your favorite amoral arms trafficker.”Watters, as noted, was the scriptwriter for a Creature of the Black Lagoon adaptation, but what's really aggravating is when guys like this have such a fixation on criminal figures, and the editor promotes Destro's MO as though it's something to celebrate. Which it's not. I don't consider villains "favorites", as though they're somebody to literally love. Heroes are whom I cherish.
“I just can’t wait to see what Dan has planned for Destro!” said Andrei Bressan. “I’m pretty excited because everything going on with the Energon Universe so far has been bonkers and Destro…he is just an absolute bad***, ready to kill and destroy.”
So is this "energon universe" something to look forward to? For all we know, based on the potential nepotism involved, along with the politics of the assigned writers themselves, it sadly may not be, though it's far from surprising in an era where much of entertainment's most famous franchises are being sent down the drain if and when the overseers make no attempt to keep divisive identity politics out of the storytelling.
