Coasters made at the expense of old pamphlet panels

The Orange County Register has an item telling how to make cup coasters from panels cut out of old pamphlets from series like Captain America, Batman and Thor.

As much as I'd like to say it's inventive and clever, however, I'm not happy to see somebody's idea for how to make homemade coasters was to cut apart pages from books that were meant for reading, not carving up. This is even worse than buying old pamphlets only for monetary value. If they're using color photocopies and scans, that's okay. But cutting apart old pamphlets is insulting to the intellect, and only compounds the notion some people only care about comics as spinoff merchandise, not as reading pastime material. If I've looked at the article's pictures correctly, whoever put those coasters together ruined some good pamphlets from yesteryear.

Making cup coasters with pictures of superheroes is fine. But it shouldn't come at the expense of the printed books.

Labels: , , , , ,

If they're using 90s- comics, I'm fine with it.

Well if they were falling apart or using series that you don't care about then it would be alright, but not in the prime of their lives.

If it is a Ron Marz book it would be a better use than reading the book.

Around a week ago Salon wrote a laughable article demanding Magneto and Professor X be turned black.

Agreed about the coaster thing. Old comics should be preserved. New ones however? Knock yourself out.

I'd rather that not happen with any comic, but, eh, if you must, go within the past year as they get reprinted plenty.

As for the Salon link, this was my favorite:

"Comics are trying to course-correct, but the process is slow. Publishers are afraid to move away from characters (and skin colors) that have historically sold well. And fans who grew up with a certain version of a character have a hard time letting go of the past. (Also, unfortunately, a bunch of fans are way racist.)"

Thanks for that remainder, Salon. I wouldn't know if I was racist with my comics if you didn't tell me... every other word. XD
